Hoopoe
A Hoopoe was at Charnock Richard this afternoon near the junction of Church Lane and Charter Lane, just north of the golf course.
This is the first record for the area since 1989 when one was at Eccleston.

Re: Hoopoe
Finally managed to catch up with the cracking Hoopoe this afternoon when it was showing well. Everyone seemed to be behaving and staying in public areas which was good to see.
Also had a quick chat with the young man who found the Hoopoe on Tuesday, now on its 6th day. Lovely story that he thought it was a parrot because of the crest and started feeding it not realising what a good bird it was. So thank you very much to him !

Had great views thanks to young farm lad who allowed me access to his yard. Bird was only 40m away

Re: Hoopoe
Sorry Gary I didn't realize it was you this morning. Thanks for showing us the right place. The Hoopoe didn't show then, but I went back in the afternoon and it showed well feeding in the field.

Re: Hoopoe
Peter, there is a bus service runs through Charnock Richard but I think it uses the other road. You'd probably have to walk the length of Charter Lane to get to Church Lane. I don't know how frequent they are. I think it's the 337.

Re: Hoopoe
Sad news. It seems the Hoopoe was taken by a Sparrowhawk this morning.

Re: Hoopoe
Talking to a birder and he didn't see it from 09.30 to mid afternoon so it must have been taken before 09.30 if taken in that area. Apparently it was attack by a Raven yesterday but put up a good fight. I was also told that someone was arrested for trespass. The farmer had a good look round his fields today but no sign of it.

Re: Hoopoe
Ian, do we know who witnessed the sad event? Sparrowhawks have a lot to answer for. They seem to be lethal at taking out vagrant birds that stay for any length of time at a particular spot. I can think of a Rosie Starling and a Grey Phalarope which met the same fate, and there are probably many others.

A chap called Dan Owen reported it on the NW Birding WhatsApps earlier this evening.
