I certainly have never had a record of one. In "Wildlife of Lancashire" one is illustrated (P253) but the text gives no indication about its status locally. I assume it must occur. It seems it is one of the few Ladybirds which feed on mildews rather than aphids. You learn a little every day it seems!

http://www.uksafari.com/ladybird16so.htm shows a photo of one recorded in Bolton

http://www.lakelandwildlife.co.uk/templ ... ageID=pic1 reports it as becoming more common in Cumbria

http://212.219.37.111/UKladybirds/speci ... 55%2060301 states that it is becoming more common

I also found one

I found one as well up at Roddlesworth Reservoir looking for the long tailed duck. It just appeared in the eyepiece of my binoculars when I wasn't looking.

I have put up a photo in my insects gallery

Orange Ladybird

Post by Neil Southworth »

I'm not sure I was aware of this Ladybird before this thread started. However, according to Weather Eye in the Times today, it is the only wildlife with any success at predicting winters. Apparently, if it hibernates by burying itself in leaf litter on the ground, the winter will be cold. But if it shelters in crevices on tree trunks, the winter will be mild. So come on Tony and Jack, where did you see them, what were they doing? We need to know!

seen in the beech woodland next to Upper Roddlesworth Reservoir where the long tailed duck was. It was a dull overcast day and the woods were damp. The wood was quite dense with little sunlight getting in. Hope this helps

unfortunately i didnt have my camera as i was taking my mum out, but the ladybird was walking along a stone wall across the road from the reservoir at the bottom of the steep hill up to the viewpoint, quite a sunny afternoon.
