Bretherton 19th Feb

Bank Hall for snowdrops, which were beautiful, also a few primroses and daffodils in flower. Just common woodland birds but Kestrel seen in Eyes Lane. Fungi on tree stumps and logs included 2 groups of Velvet Shank, Turkeytail, Smoky Bracket, Lumpy Bracket and Hairy Curtain Crust. Stopped to look at E-shaped pond on way back but I'm not tall enough to see over the hedge! At least 10 pairs of Canadas, 3 pairs of Tufted, pair of Mute Swans, 6 Coot but there might have been more birds that I couldn't see as only peeped through the hedge.

Red Fungi

Post by Joyce Riley »

Were they more cup-shaped than Jew's Ears? (or to be more PC these days they are now known as Jelly Ear!). A red cup fungus Scarlet Elf Cup is becoming much more common locally in recent years and is found at this time of year usually growing on dead moss covered logs.

Scarlet Elf Cups

Post by Joyce Riley »

Thanks for your help Dave. It is much better to look at a lovely picture like yours than to try to describe a fungus. Unfortunately, I'm not a good photographer and haven't got the necessary equipment to take good close ups but I certainly appreciate and enjoy seeing photos taken by others.
Gary - to increase your knowledge and interest in fungi, how about taking up the challenge of a fungi species list as well as birds. I might win that challenge rather than being the bottom of the league as I am still only on 43 bird species seen locally!
