Migrant Blackbirds

Post by Richard P Todd »

A fishing friend of mine from Salford sent me some images of Blackbirds with black beaks, they are beautiful. Has anyone from our area seen any of these??

I've one in my garden everyday. I recall from watching Autumn Watch 2011 that they come from Eastern Europe.

I have also had one in the garden at home every day for the last few weeks. There were also some at Yarrow Valley Park last Sunday.

This one was near the visitor centre.

migrant blabis

Post by andy leach »

with regard to the blackbill blabis they could just as easy be locally bred birds as black bills are one of the ageing criteria for blabis putting these birds as first winter birds and should start to change colour into jan/feb the main way of telling far eastern blabis is in the hand taking wing measurements 138mm or above hope this info helps

Blackbirds

Post by Dave Beevers »

While doing the Winter garden survey i regularly see up to 6 blackbirds at a time. However by taking careful notes of the beak colouration (from black to orange with various mixtures in between) and amounts of brown or even white in the wings i can identify 15/20 different birds in some weeks
