Adders & Slow Worms - Bowland

Post by Paul King »

I thought it prudent to take advantage of the great sunny weather and have a look for some of our reclusive reptiles; the Adder and Slow Worm.

Last year was a little bit of a disaster as no evidence of both species was found.
The first Adder was spotted in a new location and the others at locations I'd seen them previously.
All together, we'd spotted 3 Adders and 4 Slow Worms.

Birds spotted were: Buzzard, Kestrel, Stonechat, Dipper, Ring Ouzel, Swallow and usual upland species.

An odd find was a sheep dog with no collar, it stayed with us for the last hour of our visit.
The next challenge was to try and find out who's dog it was....
She jumped into our vehicle and had the demeanour of a working sheep dog.
We'd eliminated all the public that were in the area and set about deciding which farm to call at.
Oddly enough, the first farm we arrived at instantly recognised the the dog as "Millie" and had gone missing earlier in the day.
So, there we are, "Millie" was reunited with the farmer and was looking very "sheepish" as she knew that she'd been a very naughty girl indeed!
