Rivington Reservoirs

Post by Leonard Poxon »

Had a short walk this morning along the east bank of Lower Rivington Reservoir hoping for some Brambling in the beech trees, but no luck. Birds seen include 2 tit flocks, the first consisting of 10 to 20 birds and the second between 30 and 40 birds. Species include Blue, Coal & Great Tits and a Treecreeper, but no Long Tailed Tits. There were several groups of up to 10 Woodpigeon resting in the trees, also Robin, Chaffinch, Blackbird, Nuthatch and Magpie. There was a single Cormorant, a single Great Black Backed Gull, approx 15-20 Black Headed Gulls and a Carrion Crow that tried to hover over the water at one point.

On my way back I headed towards Anglezarke Reservoir; as dropped down Nickleton Brow I spotted a Little Egret flying (at about 11:40) along the bottom of the valley above the River Yarrow heading south east towards Upper Rivington Reservoir. I managed to stop the car and got a couple of grainy record shots with the camera.

Little Egret gives me 133 species in the Chorley Nats area this year.
