Croston Moss

Post by Neil Southworth »

Paid a quick visit to the Lock Meadow area to check out the swans. There were 28 Whoopers including 13 juveniles, and 15 Mute Swans including 7 juveniles, but no sign of any Bewick's. Two of the Whoopers had yellow Darvic rings (numbers SL4 and 075 I think). A pair of Goosander was on the river. Several hundred corvids were disturbed by something which had them all up in the air for quite some time. Other flocks included c40 Fieldfare and c30 Linnet with smaller flocks of Woodpigeon and Starling. Also recorded were Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Mistle Thrush, Jay and Yellowhammer.

Flock of around 50 Pink Footed Geese over, flock of around 40 Skylark, 2 Stonechat, a mixed flock of Linnet & Yellowhammer including a few Reed Bunting around 30 in total and a large flock 50+ (probably Linnet) in the trees to the north of Finney Lane. 2 Common Buzzard and 2 Kestrel also seen.
