Joyce's & Phil's garden fungi

Post by Joyce Riley »

Prompted by Phil Kirk bringing me specimens of fungi (see below) for confirmation of ID, I checked my own garden. Fly Agarics now up to 7, group of Sulphur Tuft on old remains of sawn down tree and a group of 8 of what my initial glance thought were Honey Fungus and closer examination showed them to be a type of Wood Mushroom. ID not positive but fit the description of Clustered Mushroom in Collins guide by Sterry & Hughes.

Phil's were more exciting as he found a Snowy Waxcap growing on one of his lawns and also lots of black Earth Tongues, probably Geoglossum cookeianum as that is the commonest species on sandy lawns but it is a species that I have only seen growing on sand dunes at Ainsdale in the past! (ID not positive as species can only be distinguished microscopically so I will have to search for the key that I was given some time ago and I have never before had the opportunity to try out on specimens). Other specimen, a LBJ is currently having a spore print made to be looked at later.
