Yarrow Valley Park

Post by Neil Southworth »

Originally did a tour of the reservoirs but there was nothing but an unpleasant gusty wind, so I decided to cut my losses and go to Birkacre. Good call! Sometimes late afternoon visits are as productive as early morning ones. On Big Lodge, I finally managed to count 11 Tufted Duck once they finished diving and formed a raft. There were also 2 GC Grebe. On Top Lodge there were 7 Teal and a Grey Wagtail, plus a couple of Moorhen. I then went down to the weir where a Grey Heron was again stood at the bottom of the fish pass hoping for a catch, but there was nothing going through whilst I was watching. Also on the river a Dipper was singing and a Kingfisher was calling. Then as I returned past Top Lodge, I heard a squeaking and squealing coming from the reed bed. Sure enough after a short wait, a Water Rail emerged from the reeds and gave good views as it scurried around the edge of the reed bed in front of the viewing platform!
Water Rail takes me to 127.
