Field Trip to Hesketh Outmarsh - Saturday 25.10.14

Post by Neil Southworth »

A return visit to the RSPB reserve at Hesketh Outmarsh to see how it has progressed since our last visit which was over three years ago!.

Meet at the reserve at 10.00 am, so that we can have a wander around the general area before the high tide, which is a 9.4 metre tide around 11.30 am.

Not many birds on the marsh when we first arrived, but as the tide flooded the marsh, pushed by a south west wind, more and more birds appeared. Little Egret numbers were into double figures, but there were just a couple of Grey Heron. Several Whooper Swans came in to join the lone Mute Swan. Good numbers of Shelduck, Mallard and Teal plus a few Wigeon and one or two Greylag Geese completed the wildfowl. Waders were limited to Lapwing, Curlew, Redshank and Snipe. Inevitably there were also a few Cormorant dotted around. A couple of Kestrel and a Buzzard were the only raptors. A large flock of Starling gave an impressive aerial display, and good numbers of Skylark were constantly chirping above our heads with a few singing when the sun came out. A flock of 20 or so Linnet was feeding near the shelter. Other birds seen included BH Gull, Herring Gull, LBB Gull, GBB Gull, Woodpigeon, Pied Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, Robin, Wren, Magpie, Jay, Chaffinch, Goldfinch and Reed Bunting. Large skeins of Pink-footed Geese could be seen and heard over on Banks Marsh.
