bad time for blue tits

Post by Mervyn Thornhill »

The nuthatches were exceptionally noisy when I was in the garden topping up bird feeders this morning and I found out why. On the ground beneath a spot where I have bird feeders was a blue tit pinned down by a nuthatch which was having a good peck at it. At least three more nuthatches were in the hawthorn tree above shouting "fight, fight, fight" with a load of tits shouting for the other side. Only when I got very close did the nuthatch let go and, to my surprise, the blue tit flew off, apparently ok.

Which is more than can be said for the one the cat bought in through the cat flap this morning and the one the sparrowhawk took off the bird table yesterday.

Although there are often minor squabbles involving nuthatches around the bird feeders we always thought them to be such pleasantly cheerful little souls - and now we know different.
