Little Grebes Astley Park 31/10/13.

Post by Ivan Lynas »

I bobbed down to the duck pond early in the afternoon to check on the little grebes and wasn't disappointed, both mum and the youngster are still hanging out there and seem relatively content for now. However, this could all change after Friday evenings huge firework display which wil be situated quite close to the pond itself. If I can find the time I'll bobb down over the weekend to see if these birds have weathered the firework storm but I'm not optimistic. Pic below shows the youngster on the pond a few days ago.

Ta John, I bobbed down to the pond this afternoon but there was no sign of the youngster. Maybe its finally moved on, I did notice it flying from one end of the pond to the other on Thursday afternoon. However, mum is still present I was watching her fishing at 2.30pm today. Pic below shows the youngster at 6 days old looking at mum.

Cheers Len, I digiscoped the nest site because it was slightly out of reach for my sigma 500. By attaching a swarovski scope to my canon body it gave me the equivalant of a decent 800 lense. The only slight down side the f stop is set at f8 only. Also I tried to time my visits when the light was at its optimum looking down on the nest site, this was usually around 6.30pm in August.

This pic is for Peter Rowlands I know he has a soft spot for these birds. The image shows the youngster flexing his wings at two weeks old in August.
