The new list for 2015 has been started. If anyone else wishes to join in, please let me know.

We have decided to introduce a new rule for 2015. In view of its rarity status - it is considered to be extinct in the North West except for a small relict population in the Chorley area - records of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker will not be accepted on call alone. A definite sighting must be made.
Nonetheless, in order to make an effort to assess the population of the species in our area, please could everyone submit all records, including call only, with grid references etc.

I've noticed that White Wagtail is being added to lists but currently hasn't been added to the species list. Also it is a sub-species linked to Pied. Siberian Chiffchaff was discounted earlier in the year from the list which is also a recognised sub-species. Just interested :)

Also Ring Necked Parakeet has been noted in the area and is not on the list - is this being presumed as an escape?

Thanks for pointing out the omissions, Ian. I've added them in. We've treated White Wagtail separately for some time, as much as anything to record the annual passage through the area of the nominate race of Pied / White Wagtail. I suppose we are being inconsistent with regard to Siberian Chiffchaff, although it is much more difficult to separate. Maybe we will have to reconsider one way or another. After all, the Lancashire Bird Report treats both separately.
As far as Ring-necked Parakeet is concerned, we will treat it as Category C, and therefore listable, until we find out anything to the contrary.

Of the 152 species seen in the Chorley Natural History Society Area in 2015, the following 17 species I did not manage to see or hear:

Jack Snipe, Osprey, Hawfinch, Common Scoter, Red Kite, Black Tailed Godwit, Corncrake, Common Crane, Goshawk, Yellow Wagtail, Red-Breasted Merganser, Twite, Marsh Harrier, Water Pipit, Grey Plover, Pintail and Snow Bunting.

Of the 135 birds I did see/hear, the following four were heard only:

Brambling, Golden Plover, Pied Flycatcher & Willow Tit.
