Reservoirs 5.7.14

Post by Neil Southworth »

In view of the fact that there have been a few Common Scoter in the north west this week, I did a tour of the reservoirs this morning. No luck on the scoter front, but a few interesting records nevertheless. A raft of 7 Tufted Duck was on Anglezarke - possibly a family group (the birds were all in eclipse so difficult to tell). The annual moulting flock of Canada Geese on Anglezarke numbered 80, with another 30 on Upper Rivington and 35 at Birkacre. The Greylag Geese on Upper Rivington are also increasing in number with 33 there this morning. Swallows were noted around Manor House and Jepson's Farm, along with one or two Swift feeding over the reservoirs. Full sightings:-
Anglezarke:- Canada Geese 80, Mallard, Tufted Duck 7, Moorhen and juvenile, GC Grebe, Cormorant, Oystercatcher, Grey Heron, Pheasant, BH Gull 8 + 4 juveniles, LBB Gull 4, Swallow, Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Nuthatch, Treecreeper and Jay
Yarrow:- Canada Geese 4, Mallard, Oystercatcher 2, BH Gull 2 + juvenile, Pied Wagtail, Willow Warbler, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Lesser Redpoll.
Upper Rivington:- Canada Geese 30, Greylag Geese 33, Mallard, GC Grebe, Moorhen, Grey Heron 3, BH Gull 14, LBB Gull, Swallow, Swift
Lower Rivington:- Canada Geese 2, Mallard, BH Gull, Pied Wagtail, Swift over water
YVP:-Canada Geese 35, Mute Swan 2 + juve, Coot and 2 juve, Coot and 1 chick, GC Grebe, the common tern young appeared to be asleep in a huddle in a corner of the raft - one adult was flying around.
