Bittern

Post by john cobham »

As this report doesnt cover our area it is for information only :

Today I visited Mere Sands Wood , Rufford and had the pleasure of watching a Bittern feeding amongst the reeds. Whilst I was only in the hide for about 30 minutes it had apparently been active through the afternoon.
I gather there are 3 Bitterns on site and basing on info from birders who were there yesterday all 3 had been active on the Wednesday and they had been in the open just yards away from the viewing windows.
From the hide just behind the Visitor Centre a Water Rail kept putting in an appearace ( unfortunately I kept missing it )
Also the feeding stations , again access through the Visitor Centre , were active with a large flock of Reed Buntings , Chaffinch , Bullfinch , Robin , Blackbird , Pheasant , Tree Sparrow , GT , BT , CT etc.
Grebes and various wildfowl were evident on the meres.
Note Reserve sightings and locations are listed outside the VC daily.

I hope that you found this of interest
