Wigan Flashes Field Trip

Post by Neil Southworth »

Don't forget tomorrow's field trip (will probably be frozen over, but there should be some open water with all the wildfowl concentrated into a small area). Meet at the venue at 9.00 am as details on Field Trip Board.

Yes, we had good views of the redhead Smew on Scotman's Flash. Thanks to Judith Smith and Ken Linkman for pointing us in the right direction.

Most of the flashes were frozen, but Scotman's had a large expanse of open water and Horrock's had a strip of ice free water. Other birds seen included Goosander, Goldeneye, Gadwall, Tufted, Pochard, Teal, continental race Cormorant, Willow Tit and Bullfinch. We also heard a Water Rail.

Glad you got the smew, I wish I could have been there but I havn't been able to walk very far since early October, trapped nerves in the back. Still it's improving slowly and I'm hoping to be out and about by spring.
