I bobbed down to a rain soaked Astley Park this afternoon to check up on the little grebes. I spent over half an hour scouring the pond with my bins but failed to locate any of the birds. This is the first time this has occurred to me after monitoring them for over seven weeks. I have a gut feeling that the adults have moved elsewhere temporarily, shaking off the shackles of the one remaining youngster and in doing so leaving it with no alternative but to become independant. This is natures way and I have seen it many times before with other birds, especially peregrines. The image below shows mum feeding the last youngster two weeks ago.
