Little Grebes Astley Park 18.10.12

Post by Ivan Lynas »

I bobbed down to Astley Park for an hour this afternoon to check up on the little Grebes. I am now convinced that one of the chicks has fledged and moved on. The remaining chick is on the verge of fledging too. This remaining youngster can now fly, but to a degree, is still relying on mother for fish which I find abit unusual. Notably dad has become abit aggressive towards this remaining chick and I have witnessed him chasing it away on a number of occasions. Maybe this can be linked to disassociation by the adults when their offspring are on the verge of fledging. The image below shows dad at 3:15PM today with his colourful plumage fading rapidly, soon to be replaced with a dull winter coat.
