Croston/mawdesley moss 7.30/9.15am WHOOPER/ PINKFOOT
Plenty of action first thing, as i arrived the sound of pinkfoot was in the air with several small flocks passing through , then the sound of whooper swans with groups of 11and 16 heading towards bretherton , 11 goosanders got up off the douglas and headed towards Bretherton , a barn owl was hunting the double hawthorn hedgrow ,( ALL THESE BIRDS BEFORE I GOT TO THE RAILWAY LINE) on crossing the railway i was greeted with the sight of more whooper swans on a large stubble field with small groups flying in all the time ( the numbers got up to around 100 birds) as i scanned through the birds i picked up on a dark bird which turned out to be a BLACK SWAN ( NO DOUBT THE SAME BIRD WHICH HAS BEEN SEEN AT MARTIN MERE) if anybody goes to see these birds make sure you give them plenty of distance as it would be a shame if they were disturbed ,i then headed towards the mawdesley side were pinkfooted geese were landing on some more stubble , i managed to get within 200 yards of the birds by hiding in a ditch and then got great views as more birds came into land , there was around 200 birds i scanned plenty of the birds but there was know white fronts with them , other birds , 3 kestrel , 1 buzzard , 18 grey partridge , several m/pipits, 4 yellowhammer feeding on split grain , 20 mallard1 little owl, also heard a wader which sounded like a curlew crossed with a golden plover which must have flown right over me but i could not pick up the bird, A GREAT MORNINGS BIRDWATCHING!
