Great Knowley Sightings

Post by Leonard Poxon »

Lots of parties of migrating swallows passing over this morning, largest group contained 15 birds, smallest 2, but average around 8. Also less numbers of small passerines generally in groups of 3 to 6 birds, the only group I identified was a group of 4 bullfinches.
Two Red Admiral butterflies one Speckled Wood and also what appeared to be a Small Copper in the garden this morning.

My daughter informed me that the 2 weeks ago two collared doves hatched out in a nest on a satellite dish bracket at the front of her house in Coppull.

A Sparrow Hawk flew through the garden last night startling a young collared dove that flew into the window before flying off unarmed.

The passage of migrating swallows seemed to stop around 13:00 hrs with only ones or twos passing through after this.
There were more butterflies though in the afternoon sun with a pair of Large White, two Red Admirals, a Peacock, a Comma and a Speckled Wood.
