White Coppice to Drinkwater's 24.8.11

Post by Neil Southworth »

Despite the apparently exceptional birding on Horwich Moors, it was still pretty quiet on Wheelton Moor. The highlight this morning was a juvenile male Stonechat. Other than that, there were single Kestrel and Grey Wagtail, a few Meadow Pipit and umpteen Swallows skimming over the moorland grass.
Butterflies seen were a couple of Gatekeepers, and a Red Admiral.

The Horwich moors probably benefit from the "lighthouse" effect of the transmitters, the night lights acting as a point of reference for migrating birds. Some of the grounded birds will disperse locally so any where may hide a hungry migrant.
