Butterflies

Post by Dave Beevers »

after a very lean time i am now getting regular visits from Large & Small Whites but nohing is being attracted to the buddleas.
however i had my first visit from a meadow brown and another first when 2 very copper coloured insects were flying together but were quickly over the hedge. On checking the ID guide they appeared to be Wall Brown. Not sure how likely that is.Any comments?

Wall Browns

Post by phil kirk »

Dave

They have two flight periods. May into mid-June then from the end of July until mid-September. This would fit. They have become very scarce in recent years. Not just locally, but in the North West as a whole - maybe even thoughout the country.

For example I received 7 records during 2008, 2009 and 2010 but 28 in the year 2000 alone.

My wife thought she saw one in our garden on Saturday, but was not certain.

If you are confident of the species it is a really nice record. Keep a watch for more around your way.

Mere sands wood used to be a good site for Wall Brown but that was around 15 years ago - don't know if you can see them there now.
