Osprey

Post by Brian Derbyshire »

Osprey, at height, flying south over Hartwood at approx 11.15am - odd date? non-breeder or failed breeder?

Great sighting Brian, at a guess its probably an unattached juvenile which will hang around for the bulk of summer before making the trip back to Africa.

I arrived at 5.50 pm and just missed the bird , waited with several twitchers ( who were from the Manchester birding sight) and eventually got brilliant views over Adlington res at 7.10 pm the bird struggled in the wind and didnt make a catch before drifting off over the trees ( maybe worth a luck first thing in the morning) other birds spotted , around 10 great crested grebes , several mallard, odd coot , 1 common tern , 1 grey wag , 1 gs pecker , family of lt tits , found a dead juv blue tit , 1 buzzard .

I arrived about 19:35, there was no sign of the bird at that time. At 20:00hrs it made an appearance coming from the north end of Adlington Reservoir. It circled around for 10mins then went back into the trees before re-appearing briefly and then disappearing back into the trees at the north end of Adlington Reservoir.

Richard,

I didn't notice any rings when I saw it yesterday. Having said that you'd a job to stand up in the wind! So holding your bins steady to make a detailed examination of the bird was well nigh impossible.

No sign of the Osprey this afternoon between 3pm & 4.30pm. As we arrived a birder was coming away, he had been there 2hrs. and it hadnt been seen.

Birds we did see as we waited were. Pr.Buzzards. Peragrine. Swifts. Swallows. H. Martin. (h) Chiffchaff. (h) W.Warbler. (h) Yellowhammer. Gt.C.Grebe. Coot. Chaffinch. Rooks. Reed Bunting . Blk.H.Gulls.
So we did see something of interest.
