Bittern

Post by lindsay »

Yesterday we had 24 Whooper swans on No 1 Pit, today Bill Aspin spotted a Bittern fly across Meadow lake, hopefully it will stick around, also a Cetti's warbler on the entrance road in lakeside bushes opposite the big layby.

Fantastic views of the bittern at 16.15 onwards, in front of the reeds on the east side of Meadow Lake. Best viewed from the grassland along the access road, the motorway side of the large layby or from the clearing in the woodland 200 yards mway side of the layby. Also fantasic starling murmuration going on overhead. 2 Green sandpiper showing well from the viewpoint over No 1 pit to the east of the Lookout.

Bittern still present on Meadow Lake but appears to be roosting on Boilton Marsh. Also present is a Siberian Chiffchaff. Kingfisher showing well on Meadow Lake and Whooper swans calling in!

The BIttern first spotted in early November has been joined today by another and they were seen roosting within 30 metres of each other on the SW side of Meadow Lake this evening. The first one has been showing well, flying at times around lunchtime but more usually seen near the base of the Osprey pole as dusk falls.
