Mediterranean gulls

Post by lindsay »

There are a record number of 12 Med gulls on site at present, the previous record being 10. These are showing well on Meadow lake with the Blackheaded gulls. The Bittern is still showing at dusk by the Osprey pole, the first chiffchaff have been heard/ seen as have several Skylarks. As the reserve has got busier over the years the Skylark had all but disappeared so the sightings are exciting. Green sandpiper are present on the river together with a little egret. Pochard , Wigeon, Teal, Redshank, many lapwings, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe and Ringed Plover are just some of the birds to be seen on the lakes. LT, Great, Coal and Blue tit, Bullfinch, many Goldfinch, Reed bunting, Tree Sparrow, Nuthatch, Tree Creeper and Buzzard amongst the many varieties of bird in the woods and along the Guild Wheel. Green Woodpecker seen and heard in several areas on the reserve this week, this is another species that has been absent for a number of years and seems now to be making a return. Sandmartins are starting to return from migration south.
