Night Heron at Birkacre 26.9.09

Post by Neil Southworth »

That got you looking, didn't it! A report of a Night Heron at the weir from non-birders, who didn't know what they were looking at, but were advised by a passer by that it was a Night Heron. They were also told there were two others on the tern raft! Must have been a Cormorant then! Even so, it seems a bit improbable that a Cormorant would go fishing up by the fish ladder - or perhaps not! Has any one else seen a Cormorant there?
Decided I'd better have a look, and certainly one of the stones near the weir / fish ladder contains Cormorant type droppings. The only birds at the weir were 3 Grey Wagtails.

Birds on Big Lodge included Cormorant and pair GC Grebe.
Birds on Top Lodge included 2 Grey Wagtail and 3 Grey Heron.

Humm dont think a Cormorant would feed at the weir, as their diving birds, although saying that above and behind the weir is quite deep now well it was last time I passed by, dont think it would be a night heron they dont even look the same, probably the passer by just had a stab in the dark (Night, pun intended) at the species, have night herons ever been recorded at Birkacre

NIGHT HERON.

Post by nora west »

There has never been Night Heron at Birkacre as far as I know. Maybe it was a Grey Heron thinking it was night !. Or perhaps its the same person who saw Red Necked Grebe and Golden Oriel the other week. Maybe I am just going down at the wrong time. :!:
