Morrison's mushrooms

Post by Joyce Riley »

Not for sale in the superstore but following a tip-off about fungi growing under Silver Birch trees near to Morrison's, I went to look. Lots of Brown Rollrims, typically associated with birch, likewise a few Brown Birch Boletes and Birch Brittlegills but best of all were lots of 'woolly' milkcaps. They weren't the species now known officially as 'Woolly Milkcap' = Lactarious torminosus but the species now called ‘Bearded Milkcap’ = Lactarius pubescens, which is distinguished by being paler and without the distinct concentric bands on the cap. The stem of L. pubescens also often has a rosy pink band at the apex where the stem joins on to the underneath of the cap.
Thanks to Tony D. and friend for the tip-off.
