West Pennine Moors

Post by Neville Root »

Taking advantage of the later evenings and dry weather (albeit a bit parky on the tops) riding onto Anglezarke moors 4 times this week (on the MTB) from Wheelton Moor in the N to Yarrow Res in the S.

Curlew (seen/heard, incl 10 flying over LMV), a lot of pheasant (surprising one of these is a lot more freaky than treading on a jack snipe). BH gull, Med gulls (2 calling) and oystercatcher (2) on the Yarrow Res side. Red Grouse, raven and pied wagtail near Solomon's. Skylark, stonechat (5/6 Wheelton Moor and 2 pairs along the track to Hempshaw's) and meadow pipit across all of the moor. Fieldfare (6) off Tithe Barn Lane.
No further sign of wheatear and the willow warblers are wisely waiting until it warms up a bit up there.

Across YVP towards the railway line (tonight): Pair of mandarin calling in flight, several song thrush, starling and redwing in the trees beyond Willow Tree Farm, Canada geese (2) and pied wagtail (2) in a damp field, GSW, chiffchaff. Firemen tackling a blaze in the woods below Common Bank Industrial estate tonight (sigh).

Ringtail hen harrier in the west of the recording area and several non-vis noc-migging scoters take Chorley species total for the year to 99.
