Counting Meadow Pipits

Post by Jed Kirkham »

Morning exercise possibly not in keeping with the 1 hour a day exercise prescribed, but there are few people out on the moors first thing. And for anyone with "moor envy", I'm missing wandering around other parts of Chorley...

Brinscall - Great Hill Farm via the main track - return via the direct fenceline to The Temples/Ratten Clough. 0615 - 0910 hrs

Meadow Pipit (119) - no doubt missed a few!
Skylark (21)
Pheasant (13) - after discussion re increased numbers, possibly more than usual? Males on walls, visible and vocal
Carrion Crow (17)
Raven (2)
Red grouse (10)
Snipe (2) 2 flushed near New Temple
Kestrel (1) - hunting over Calico Hall area 0645hrs
Curlew (5) 4 south of GH Farm - saw 3 flying, heard another there (0730hrs). 1 heard earlier from the former Botany Bay Farm direction
Blackbird singing at Drinkwaters 07.10 - not a Ring Ouzel, I looked out for them. And scanned the trees at DBBrook for the return of the Gt Grey Shrike, absent.
Wren (4) 1 singing at Drinkwaters/GH Farm/New Temple/Ratten Clough
Stonechat (4)
Mallard (3) at New Temple
Buzzard (2) flying S over Gt Hill
Pied Wagtail (3) at Ratten Clough
Woodpigeon (3)
Grey Heron (1) over Ratten Clough
Canada Goose (2) at Solomon's Temple

the above excludes Garden/woodland birds, I was Meadow Pipitted out by the time I got back to Well Lane, no more counting! - though I did see a Treecreeper...
