Great Close/Croston Finney

Post by John Frankland » Fri Sep 20, 2019 6:11 pm

Late afternoon visit walking from Great Hanging Bridge along the river and back past the Great Close puddles.

Two highlights:

In the field at the far end of the walk by the railway was another stunning Clouded Yellow. Seen well in both flight and feeding on the ground. Seemed deeper yellow this one than the one a couple of weeks ago. Also 10-12 Snipe in this field.

A cream headed Marsh Harrier hunting 445 to 500 over the flooded wheat field, Great Close and then circled high over the river before being lost.

2 Wheatear were getting closer to Africa as they kept taking off and landing as I walked down the bank !

10-15 Skylark and a few Meadow Pipit. 2 Buzzard and 2 Kestrel. 2 Mute Swan and 3 Goosander on the river with a few Mallard.

At Eyes Lane, a further 5 Mute Swan included 3 juveniles. 2 Kestrel and a Buzzard.
