A small alder in Astley park was full of these and in process of being stripped bare (by the beetles or by their larvae? - although I only saw the beetles) on 11th September.

Alder leaf beetles have killed one small tree in my garden & are now onto a second. It appears birds don't want to eat them, when squashed it's a bright orange similar to Harlequin Ladybirds. In the Spring, the Alder leaf beetles appear to come from the ground around the tree, climb up the tree trunk onto branches to eat leaf buds, mate & lay eggs. Their caterpillars are all black & about 5mm long & leave leafs looking like brown tissue paper after they've eaten the green surface

David, your trees should survive the defoliation. They should be fine next year.
