Withnell Moor

Post by Neville Root »

After no luck at a sub-Arctic George's Lane yesterday morning, came across 4 ring ouzel today (8.30am) near the Ratten Clough ruin on Withnell Moor. Flushed by mountain bikers down the valley towards Brinscall, 1 female dropped to feed on the carrots in the sheep field. Managed to catch up with a male further down that was calling repeatedly. The 3 other ouzels eventually caught up with it and together flew off across the Moors. Also curlew (heard), wheatear (2), stonechat (f), redpoll and several linnet, mipit and skylark.

Ring ouzel takes Chorley species total for the year to 101.

....coming down from the moor and standing at the bottom of Well Lane (Brinscall) heard a singing blackcap. In the surrounding trees and above were BH gull, buzzard, jackdaw, GSW, song thrush, blackbird, treecreeper, redpoll, coal-Gr-Bl-LT tit, chiffchaff - definitely spring in the air today.

Blackcap takes Chorley species total for the year to 102.
