Out and About (west and east)

Post by Neville Root »

2.00-4.30pm - walk from the top of Black Coppice quarry over the moors to Round Loaf and back down Dean Black Brook - hoping for an ouzel, but got 2 stonechat (one on the moors and one down in the Brook), c snipe flushed, red grouse flying at great speed in a wide circle, plenty of displaying mipits and skylark. Down off the moors were peregrine, pied wag (2) on the cricket pitch and a single curlew over it, goldcrest (2). Earlier 2 male wheatear in the field behind the cricket pavillion.

Eyes Lane (5.15-6.00pm) - the 2 large scrapes are more or less dry, but a small 3rd scrape has appeared and had 13 pied wags, 2 LRP and 2 redshanks and a mipit on it. On the 'original' flood were oystercatcher (2) and a few lapwing, then 11 shelducks flew in and landed among them. Woodpigeon, stock dove (2) and a few herring\LBB gulls overhead.

Red grouse and LRP takes Chorley species for the year total to 100.

Thx John. I've just checked my records for last year (2018) and found I reached the 100 total on the same day (31/3), with the same bird (LRP), at the same location (Eyes Lane). Bizarre.

Yes, well done Neville! Makes my current 75 seem a bit paltry but I'm a slow starter in everything and I won't be too upset if my final total is around 100

Cheers Jed. Don't worry about your total, I started off like that. Took me a year or two to compete with the boys at the top of the list. All good fun.
