Field Trip to Wigan Flashes

Post by Jed Kirkham »

A Chilly northerly, staying fine & dry throughout. 0900hrs to 1145hrs.

The group watched from the screen at the start and end of the field trip, near the Wellham Road entrance where there are feeders beside a pool, reedbeds, and damp woodland/scrub. Seen/heard from this spot (inc. from the parking area) included GS Woodpecker, House Sparrow, Feral Pigeon, Magpie, Blackbird, Goldfinch (ca. 20), Great, Blue, Coal, LT Tits, and Willow Tit (1), Pheasant, Chaffinch, Lesser Redpoll (1), Reed Bunting (ca. 8), Nuthatch, Siskin (3), & Dunnock.

Walking beside the canal and looking over various Flashes, other birds included Cormorant, Carrion Crow, Mallard, Coot, Goldeneye (1), Tufted Duck, Black-headed Gulls, GC Grebe, Little Grebe, Grey Heron, Goosander, Mute Swan, Pochard (4), Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Bullfinch, Buzzard (2), Woodpigeon, Robin, Moorhen, Canada Geese (please ask Neville whether these may have been Cackling/Todd's/hutchinsii, Feral etc, he is a wealth of info on all things CG - only half-joking mate...), Shoveler, Gadwall (ca 6?), Lapwing (1), Greylag Geese, and a Water Rail was heard too.
Surprisingly no Teal.

43 sp. - as usual if anyone on the field trip can add to this/amend re my numbers, please do so, many thanks.
