Hoghton Field Trip

Post by Neil Southworth »

Nine members turned out on a showery morning for a wander through the countryside of the Hoghton estate. The first bit of excitement saw us in the midst of train spotters as the Flying Scotsman steamed under the first bridge we had to cross at the start of the walk. Good timing! Shortly afterwards a skein of c60 Pink-footed Geese was unexpected as they flew over south-westwards. Otherwise it was fairly quiet, but we nevertheless accumulated a list of more or less all we might expect to see. Full sightings:- Mute Swan 2, PFG c60, Mallard, Goosander, Moorhen, Pheasant 3, Buzzard 2, Kestrel 2, Cormorant 2, Snipe, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove 4, BH Gull 25, Herring Gull, LBB Gull, Jay 2, Magpie 2, Crow, Jackdaw, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Wren, Robin, Dunnock, Blue, Great, Coal and LT Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Starling, House Sparrow, Grey and Pied Wagtail, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Bullfinch
Mammals:- Molehills (lots), Rabbit (dead), vole holes by a pond, Grey Squirrel 3
