Nuthatch behaviour

I have just watched a nuthatch (they nest in the garden and are always present) extract a peanut from the feeders and bury it in a plant pot on the patio. I haven't seen them do that before but have often found peanuts in the pots and assumed it was down to the squirrels.

PS on a non connected issue. Walking the dog through Astley Park this morning the river smelled badly of petrol, or some other fuel, which was also visible on the surface. We reported it to the Environment Agency and gathered that we weren't the first to do so.

Oddly enough, my wife has today watched another (or the same) nuthatch carefully deposit a peanut in the gap between flags in the front garden and then remove it and place it in a better gap.

I have notice this behaviour all the time in my garden, especially the Sunflower Hearts, they push them between the planks and cross rales of my fencing, then the squirrel comes along and sniffs them out.
