Garden Birds

Post by phil kirk »

Decades ago, House Sparrows, Greenfinches and Collared Doves were numerous in our garden. These days we seldom see them, but today they all showed up together (2 Greenfinches and one each of the others). There were 5 Stock Doves on the lawn this morning and lots of Goldfinches. Decades ago we get no Stock Doves and very rarely saw a Goldfinch. Times change.

Phil certainly agree about Collared Doves. These seem to have been replaced in our garden by wood pigeons by about 4 to 1.

We've had lots of Goldfinches in our garden over the last two years whereas, previously, we haven't seen any in the last 25years. They must be moving from a woodland habitat to urban gardens. Also, large numbers of Crows, Jackdaws & Magpie in & around the houses & gardens, steadily increasing in numbers over the last five years ??

I would say the largest growth in frequency of visiting our garden in the last 20 or so years is goldfinch, long tailed tit, wood pigeon, nuthatch and GSW and greatest declines in song thrush, collared dove and greenfinch. Staying stable -blackbird, robin, dunnock, magpie and wren plus the "common"tits (blue, great, coal). House sparrows are increasing but still way below historical levels in this area.

I haven't seen a greenfinch lately but do get goldfinch now when 20 years ago none. Get collar doves daily, jackdaw, coal, blue ad Great Tits, occasional LTT, big increase in number of house sparrows, steady numbers of starlings and increasing numbers of buzzard and raven.

This is an interesting (and in many ways, disturbing) read about bird populations including several mentioned in this thread

Collared Doves and Greenfinch are only occassional in my garden whereas they used to be daily in decent numbers. As for House Sparrows a pair arrived in the garden today, the first for over a year. This is despite a couple of small colonies along Runshaw Lane.
