Eyes Lane Merlins

Post by John Frankland »

The Merlins seem to have taken a liking to the field of Skylarks between the bridge and the traditional flood area. Good views of 3 separate Merlins seen this afternoon being 1 male and 2 females (1 on ground as a 2nd flew through the Skylark flock at the same time).

Also seen were 1 Peregrine, 3 Buzzard, c45 Com Bunting, c100 Skylark, few Linnet, few Fieldfare, 2 Goosander, 1 Cormorant and an adult Common Gull over was the first I’ve seen for a while.

I had a trip there in late afternoon to dusk and then walked along the River Douglas towards Croston.

In the field on the west side of the river and south of Eyes Lane was a flock of 800-900 Starling, overhead a spread out mixed flock of Skylark and Pipits flew over approx 15 in total. There were 6+ Redwing on Eyes Lane and 20+ Fieldfare towards Croston. On the river was a Cormorant with a large flounder which it eventually swallowed but it remained in its throat for some time with the neck looking like a drainpipe; there were approximately 40 Teal and around 60 Mallard split between the flooded field and the river. Also 2 Moorhen on the river.
Two Merlin flew together parallel to the river in a southerly direction later followed by a Sparrowhawk that doubled back after passing the pumping station.
Two Common Buzzard flew overhead. There were 2 juvenile Whooper Swans feeding on the field between the river and the canal to the north of Eyes Lane. 6 Corn Bunting, Chaffinch, Robin and Wren were also seen/heard.
