Fieldfare Friday

Post by Jed Kirkham »

Afternoon (3 hours) spent on the moors around Withnell Quarry to dusk. Female Kestrel very active throughout. Raven, 1 Stonechat, several Meadow Pipits, 5 Cormorant, Woodpigeons, Carrion Crows, Magpies. Watched many Fieldfare in and around the woods to the east of the quarry for about an hour, these flew south (approx. 110) in 2 flocks at 15.45hrs. A smaller flock of Redwing (about 10) flew into the woods an hour later, as I was watching them through the scope I heard calling above and approx. 50 flew over me heading SW. At 17.30hrs another flock of about 120 thrushes flew S about half a mile away - possibly Fieldfare, they looked a bit big for Redwing.
Possibly a Red Admiral - saw it at distance but saw white on the wings. Also a bat outside home at 18.20hrs, probably Common Pipistrelle.
