Amphibians in West Pennine Moors SSSI

Post by paul b »

One of our members, Steve Martin, is attempting to get Natural England to add key amphibian waterbodies as "sensitive SSSI features"-to do this he needs evidence of toads, frogs and newts in the area covered by the SSSI.

Do you know of any ponds, ditches and other water bodies with populations? Obviously we know about toads at Ward's reservoir(!) [and some frogs and newts too] -the need is for evidence from other sites, away from Belmont which Steve covers.
The key numbers are
*Palmate Newt: More than 10
*Smooth Newt: More than 10
*Common Toad: Over 100 counted or 500 estimated
*Common Frog: Over 50 clumps of spawn
*Great Crested Newt: Any records! As we don’t have any known populations within the WPM SSSI boundary (Steve's comment).

Two further points -as evidence is vital, any photos would be very helpful as would grid references; and the sites need to be within the WPM SSSI

Post any information on this thread or PM me
Many thanks

PS Not long to the toads getting busy again so watch out for news on the Toad Crossing -and if any other sites need help, please get back to me.
