Great pictures Len.

I tried this afternoon from 215 to 400 but unfortunately no joy with the Crossbills. I thought I had them at one stage when a group landed in the top of a tree including red individuals but they turned out to be 5 Bullfinch instead !

It was pretty murky and misty with low cloud which didn’t help.

Managed 3 Raven, 1 Buzzard, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Siskin, 1 Snipe, 2 Jay and a few Meadow Pipit.

Thanks John, the light was pretty poor at that time too.

One thing I forgot to add was that I saw 2 Butterflies at Lead mine clough, at tree top height. They were the size of a Small Blue, but they never came close enough to identify. One was at the top path that leads to the bridge over the waterfall and the other was at the Canadian Aircrew's memorial. Could they have been a very late batch of Purple Hairstreak??

If at first you don’t succeed .....

Better luck this morning with the Crossbills and a gathering of birders (good to see Neville and Neil).

First seen as a calling flight group of 5 by the monument heading up towards the dead woods. Then spotted by Neville showing well feeding in a tree as a group of 7 followed by a flight view of about 15.

Also seen were 1 or 2 groups of 3 Redwing, Jay, Bullfinch 5, Chaffinch few, Meadow Pipit c20, Coal Tit, Great Tit, 2 Goldcrest, Pied Wagtail 2 and a Snipe.

Also called in at Belmont Reservoir picking up a Stonechat by the road across the moors.

North end produced a Little Grebe, c20-25 each of Teal and Mallard, 3 Canada Geese and 1 Grey Heron.

The Crossbill takes me to 140 species for the year, matching my total last year.

Same Lead Mine sightings as John, with the addition of an earlier skein of c.70 pink foots flying west. The 7 crossbills in the pine tree consisted of 5m & 2f.

Common Crossbill takes my Chorley species total for the year to 138. Need to add crossbill to the year's recorded species total Neil.

Thanks Neville. I'd not realized that we hadn't had Crossbill before this year.
Other sightings:- several Skylark, flock of LT Tits, several Siskin
Mammals:- grey Squirrel, fresh molehills
Fungi:- Lots of Fly Agaric and other species which were well past their best.
