A Tiered Tooth fungi (Hericeum cirrhatum) was found in the Chorley area yesterday by Andrea Walsh. This is a very rare fungus in the UK, especially in the north and is a IUCN Red Listed Species. Exact location will not be disclosed as there is a threat to this species because of collectors (see photos below).

Re: Tiered Tooth fungi
A great find -sad to hear there are people who will "collect" ,AKA destroy, such a beautiful thing. Need to be looking out for some more -without giving anything away, does it have a host tree or other habitat preference?

Re: Tiered Tooth fungi
They are usually found on felled hardwood trees, mainly Beech. On one website I looked at it only indicated 172 sightings (in total records in the UK) of which 5 were in the northwest. Of these only 2 were described as confirmed, one in Cheshire and 1 in Liverpool. The other 3 were north of Manchester, one of which looked to be in the Rivington area.
