Withnell Fold Flashes and reserve

Post by Neil Southworth »

Unsurprisingly, all the pools are bone dry. Nevertheless a Sedge Warbler and 3 Reed Buntings were still singing, but no sign of any Lapwings. A pair of Mute Swan with no young were on the canal. A couple of Buzzards looked pristine from a distance so may have been young birds. 9 Swallows perched on telephone wires were mainly young birds. There were no damselflies along the canal which might be explained by a fairly ruthless cut of the canalside vegetation. Sightings:- pair Mute Swan, feral hybrid geese 13, Mallard 4, Buzzard 2, Sparrowhawk, Grey Heron 2, Jay, Swift, Skylark (singing), Pied Wagtail, Swallow, House Martin, Chiffchaff 2 (singing), Garden Warbler, Sedge Warbler (singing), Treecreeper (singing), Nuthatch, Song Thrush (carrying food), Goldfinch, Bullfinch, Reed Bunting 3 (singing)
Butterflies:- large White 5-10, Small White 20 - 50, Speckled Wood 2-5, Gatekeeper 2-5, Meadow Brown, Small Tortoiseshell
Odonata:- Brown Hawker 3, plenty of blue damselflies on the reserve but too distant to id
Flora:- Himalayan Balsam extensive within the reserve
Fish:- hundreds basking just below the surface of the canal
