Bretherton Croston Wymott circular

Post by John Frankland »

Glorious 7 mile countryside walk starting Cocker Bar Bridge, through last year’s Quail fields, into Bretherton, past E Shaped ponds, along River Lostock towards Wymott, through Wymott prison and back past Wymott ponds.

Like Neville, struggled on some of the overgrown public footpaths but managed to battle through.

Generally, was pleasing to see that some of the traditional farmland birds seemed to be doing quite well based on numbers seen or heard.

Highlights:
Grey Patridge 2 near Cocker Bar Bridge chasing of a Red-legged cousin.
Lesser Whitethroat 4-6. A fledgling with 2 adults near last year’s Quail field. Also an adult with food and alarm calls looked like it was feeding by the dead tree on the S bend on Flag Lane, Bretherton. Other calls close by sounded the same.
Whitethroat 10-15.
Willow Warbler 4 singing mainly near Wymott area.
Chiffchaff 5 singing.
Sedge Warbler 1 on river near E shaped ponds.
Yellowhammer 10+
Reed Bunting 4
Tree Sparrow 2. House Sparrow 6.
Linnet 4. Goldfinch 8. Bullfinch 3. Chaffinch 4.
Skylark 4+
Swift 6. Swallow 4.
Shelduck 3
Lapwing 4+
Great Crested Grebe 1 on E shaped ponds.
Canada Goose 20. Grey Heron 1.
Sparrowhawk 1. Kestrel 2. Buzzard 4.
Oystercatcher 5 in 3 places.
Great Spotted Woodpecker 1.
Long-tailed Tit family near Wymott.
Mistle Thrush 1, Song Thrush 2.

Butterflies included Meadow Brown 2 and Speckled Wood 1.

Several hares too.
