Our first summer evening walk will be to Roddlesworth Woods on Thursday 17th May, starting at 7.00 pm prompt.

Meet at the visitor centre car park on the Tockholes Road.

Don't forget tomorrow evening's walk. The main target will be Spotted Flycatcher.

Hope there will be some bats too -has anyone going who has a bat detector?

Yes, I have a bat detector - a fairly basic one and I'm not an expert but always enjoy listening for them when its sometimes difficult to see them (a bit like birds in some ways...)

On the way home from tonight's walk I paid a brief visit to Rakes Brook reservoir at Abbey village, where a large bat was feeding over the water. Daubentons possibly?.
Also 6 Canada Geese. Moorhen and a distant Tawny Owl

I think I have counted correctly that there were 10 CDNHS members on our very interesting walk -it was a very calm and sunny evening for it.
Roddlesworth is a superb habitat for those who've not been -mature mixed woodland with plenty of undergrowth and really vivid bluebells in the strong sunshine.Plus the reservoirs of course.
Nice to catch some folk dancers at the Royal Arms car park as we finished the walk

Fine evening, almost cloudless, calm, good visibility and cooling down towards sunset. 10 in the group. Walked between 1900-2100 hrs from Tockholes, through the woods and a circuit of the reservoir.
Birds seen/heard: GS Woodpecker, Chaffinch,Blackbird, Robin , Chiffchaff, Blackcap (2), Woodpigeon, Song Thrush, Carrion Crow, Grey Wagtail, BH Gulls, Cuckoo, Mallard, Wren, Nuthatch, Swallow (1) (no other hirundines/swifts), Willow Warbler, Magpie, Curlew & Dunnock.
No bats, probably a bit early.
Water Shrew seen.
I now know what a Horse's Hoof fungi looks like so it was very successful.
