Annual Rookery census

Post by Neil Southworth »

This year's figures, with last year's in brackets:-

Railway Road, Adlington 38 (40)
Red Cat, Wheelton........25 (8)
St Chad's, Wheelton........3 (8)
Howard, Wheelton........14(23)
Lower Wheelton ............4 (4)
Whins Lane, Wheelton....71 (69)
Town House, Brindle......40 (26)
Buckshaw Village..........29 (21)
A49 Euxton.................40 (35)
Croston Bowling Green...71 (58)
Town Road, Croston........0 (2)
Westhead Road, Croston. .8 (8)
Total........................343 (302)

A pleasing increase on last year's figures, partly explained by being a week later. The most significant increases were at Brindle and at Croston.

It was nice to hear Greenfinches singing at most locations. Similarly Nuthatches were calling at most locations. 7 Goosander and an Oystercatcher flew over Croft Lodge at Brinscall. A minimum of 6 Buzzards were circling over Runshaw Lane. 2 or 3 Chiffchaff were singing at Croston.

Hi. There are also 8 nests in trees behind the Black Horse pub on Gregson Lane. This is right 9n the border between Chorley and South Ribble if that helps?

Mark, do you have a grid reference for your Gregson Lane rookery, so that we can check if it's within our recording area?

Yes it is. The South Ribble/ Brindle road signs are in front of the trees where the nests are.

Checked it out this morning after doing my Jack Green BBS. Unfortunately it is just outside our recording area. It couldn't be closer. Just the wrong side of the boundary. I counted 10 nests this morning.

That's a shame. Never mind. Still a healthy little number now
