Feeding station for Hawfinches .

Post by gary lilley »

Maybe its time to create a feeding station for the influx of hawfinch in the area ( yarrow valley did well with brambling last winter ) im willing to buy a sack of black sun flower seeds for the cause, any ideas for any locations or do we stick with yarrow valley again ? .

I was thinking the same yesterday for Eyes Lane. Maybe not for Hawfinch but Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting, Tree Sparrow etc.

Most of these Hawfinch records seem to be flyovers. We could do with some grounded sightings to see where they are frequenting. Most historical Chorley records have come from Duxbury Woods and the Hoghton area.
I believe the guy who set up the tip feeding station last winter has started feeding again. As Neville asked, do you know where there are any Hornbeams?

I met the Vis miggers above Georges Lane on Mon and the hawfinches were moving fast (and distant) in a westerly direction i.e. towards Chorley. I think they only got the first Manchester record shot (in flight) yesterday, so they do not appear to be hanging around.

There were the couple of sightings at Duxbury golf course last week that did seem to be of perched birds initially based on what I read on twitter. I’ve stocked up my garden feeders so am keeping fingers crossed :-)

Ian,
Do you have any names associated with the Duxbury sightings. Send me a pm if you prefer. Neil

This is the link to one of his tweets which I had picked up retweeted by Bill Aspin...

If it doesn’t work it is titled Stuart’s birding, and based on other tweets and Facebook posts I’m guessing it might be Stuart Darbyshire who regularly birds the Ribble Estuary area. A good round of golf enhanced by good birds :-)

Cheers
Ian

Thanks Ian. It seems sufficiently authentic to be able to add Hawfinch to the year list.

There is a Hornbeam outside Astley Hall. Full of fruit. Maybe worth watching.

There are at least 5 Hornbeam Trees in that part of Astley Park, there are two in Phil's photo next to one another and another 3 in the lawned area to the east of the path between the Hall and Ackhurst Lodge, all are full of seedcases/fruit. No sign of any Hawfinches though!

Birds Seen include 3 Mute Swan, Mallard, BH Gull, Raven, Carrion Crow, Magpie, Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Great Tit, Chaffinch and 2 Nuthatch.
