Post by nora west »

Got message off my brother Ken Haydock.today..Yesterday his friend Jill.found three.today Ken found 26without really trying.Brinscall cafe end of Withnell n/reserve.

Go from cafe end of n/reserve. And after approx.50 yds.look on the grassy area on the right hand side of the path for the most concentrated area for the Ringlets.

At least 20 Ringlets at the site reported by Ken. Only one or two further along the path, where Meadow Brown (10-20) was the dominant species. Also lots of Small / Large Skipper (10-20) plus a single Red Admiral.
Flora included lots of Southern Marsh Orchid
Birds included pair of Moorhen with 5 chicks and a couple of well grown juveniles. Chiffchaff and Whitethroat singing, Willow Warbler carrying food. A few House Martin and Swift over.

Maximum of 6 seen this morning which were I presume in the same area seen by Ken and Neil (i.e. after entering from the gate off Fellstone Stone head westwards for around 100 yds keeping to the left on the old course of the railway rather than following the track to right towards the pond). Also seen in this area were 2 Speckled wood including an extremely worn individual that looked like it might be a different species), 2 Meadow Brown and 1 Large White.

Following the old railway track eastwards to Abbey village we saw/heard the following:

Birds - Willow Warbler, Blackcap. Chiffchaff, House Sparrow, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Nuthatch, Goldcrest, Swift, Swallow, House Martin, Jackdaw.

Lepidoptera - 2 Speckled Wood.

Odonata - 1 Southern Hawker (teneral female)

No Len, you need to access the track from School Lane in Brinscall near the baths and opposite the cafe. The area where the Ringlets are is just about 50 yards down the track on the right hand side.
