Chorley walk 20 6 17

Post by Mervyn Thornhill »

I went for a walk in the very hot weather with an old friend (not from Chorley) from the A6 at Duxbury, through the YVP and Common Bank into Astley Park and have to say that Chorley did me and itself proud. Duxbury Woods, beautiful with frequent large fish in the river and plenty of interest on the banks. At Birkacre, amongst much else, the highlights were the kingfisher in its usual perch but dropping in to catch a fish in full view of us and other spectators, Billy and Esme and their six cygnets performing to their audience, the grebes one of them carrying the chick on its back, the immense clouds of damsel flies, the likes of which I've never seen before and the Canada geese with their four goslings. Moving on to Gillibrand and the great display of orchids at the north end (I just presumed they are all common spotted unless someone can tell me otherwise) and finally to Astley Park - perhaps not of particular wildlife interest but a beautiful park.

The one downside throughout the walk - the balsam
