Went to the finney this evening in hope of a little owl but ended up with at least 2 short eared owls possibly 3 seen in the fading light near to the railway line also seen , 1 heron , 3 grey partridge calling , blackbird and wren in song , 2 mallard , another rare sight was that of around 60 fieldfares roosting on the ground near to finney lane ( flushed the birds in near darkness ) , also managed to see the black swan with the whoopers over at bretherton earlier on .
Short eared owl brings my chorley year list up to 105 species .

Cheers John , hope they stay around , its worth checking both sides of the railway ( the owls were last seen on the large ploughed field down on the ground on the croston moss side ) .

Park near to the great hanging bridge ( meadow lane ) you are then on the finney or park on drinkhouse lane and head towards the railway line from croston moss side .
